Differentiated Learning Made Simple with SRF

Every classroom is filled with students at different levels of readiness, confidence, and musical experience. That’s why differentiated learning is so important and why Sight Reading Factory (SRF) makes it easy to provide students with ensemble music and assignments that meet them right where they are. Whether you’re teaching soloists or full ensembles, SRF gives you flexible tools to customize learning for every student.

Differentiated sight reading for ensembles:The newest feature on SRF is the ability to differentiate within ensemble music through customizable multi-part ensemble sight reading. This is an absolute game changer. Teachers can generate ensemble music where parts can be tailored to the specific needs of their players. Simplify rhythms or ranges for developing musicians and keep advanced parts, challenging, and engaging for those who need it.This means your full ensemble can sight read together, even when students are at very different skill levels, without sacrificing musical integrity or instructional efficiency.

Customization in ensemble music.

Differentiated sight reading for individual students:For individual students, SRF offers multiple ways to tailor assignments. Within the SRF learning management system, teachers can group students into labeled classes. This could be ‘Concert Band Blue’, ‘Concert Band Green’, and so on, making it easy to assign sight reading assignments at the right level without overwhelming students who aren’t ready for more advanced material. If all students are in the same class, you can also allow them to select their own level when completing an assignment. This encourages independence, builds ownership, and supports student confidence. And when standard SRF levels don’t quite fit your needs, custom levels allow you to fine-tune assignments to match your students precisely.

Two of our most popular integrations are with Canvas and Schoology.

If you’re using Canvas, differentiated learning becomes even more streamlined. After integrating SRF, the default Canvas assignment setting is “Assign To: Everyone.” With a quick adjustment, you can instead assign SRF activities to specific students or groups you’ve created in Canvas. This ensures each learner or section receives music that’s appropriately challenging.

Schoology offers similar flexibility. When creating or editing an assignment, teachers can use the “Individually Assign” option to choose exactly which student or group receives the assignment. Whether you’re differentiating for individuals, sections, or entire ensembles, SRF fits seamlessly into your existing workflow.

With these tools, SRF empowers educators to deliver differentiated instruction that saves time while maximizing student growth. From solo practice to fully customized ensemble sight reading, you can give every learner an experience tailored to their abilities, helping students build confidence, stay engaged, and make steady progress in their sight reading skills.
